Nurdle Coasts

Client: Nurdle.org.uk

Machines clearing Nurdles: 7

Nurdles cleared: 5.375million

Scope of work: Your IT Man partners with Nurdle to combat micro-plastics

In an industry dominated by excessive waste, Your IT Man starts working with a ground-breaking ecological start-up. How do you clear microplastics the sea deposits on our coastal beaches? With a very clever machine from genius creator Josh. This is going to make you re-think everything.

Nurdle Coasts make sand sifting trommel machines, to aid in unearthing buried plastic from the sand. They focus specifically on micro-plastic ‘nurdles’, as these tiny plastic pellets cause havoc on our wildlife and beach cleaning communities find these particular plastic pests the hardest to recover. Their sieves are specifically designed to remove as much plastic as possible whilst leaving all the sand and as much organic matter on the beach.

It’s magical to see the trommel in action. Our sieve can be seen regularly at Saunton Sands in North Devon. The 5km long sandy beach is backed by a four square miles of United Nations designated sand dunes. Surfing and bathing is very popular here with the water quality rated as “excellent”. Once in position at the high-tide mark you can see it being fed shovel after shovel of sand. As soon as the sieve is rotated (so easily its almost jaw-dropping), the sand falls effortless through leaving behind the nurdles along with other plastic waste and rubbish which has contaminated the beach.

Until you’ve done a beach clean you have no idea how much waste and rubbish gets washed up – the large visible items might get the immediate glory; the bottles and cans, the bundles of fishing line and commercial string… but by quantity, the micro plastic waste is staggering. Too small to even see, impossible to pickup – unless you’ve got a trommel at your disposal.

What the client says

“After talking to Josh and understanding the impact of microplastics on our beaches and wildlife I knew we just had to get involved and get one for Plastic Free North Devon”Simon Jessop, Managing Director, Your IT Man.

What can we do to help?

It’s no secret that the IT industry generates a huge quantity of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). As a nation, our insatiable appetite for the newest and best gadgets is staggering. We are addicted to IT, chained to our smart phones and tablets – it’s a drug and we can’t help ourselves. Everything needs to be bigger, better, faster, lighter, brighter, more powerful… The cost of this is huge, not just financially but to the environment – more now than ever.

We offer a comprehensive fixed-cost recycling service to every customer who does business with us. You can recycle everything from laptops and desktop computers to printers and other networking equipment. All personal and private data is first separated and destroyed before the equipment is then either re-purposed, re-used to charities or schools or recycled back to it’s base metals.

DP Agri

Client: www.dpagri.co.uk

Number of sites: 3

Number of staff: 14

Slices of cake: 9

Scope of work: Complete CAT6 rewire at all 3 customer sites, new converged voice and data connections, tailored cloud based phone system, IP-based CCTV system with IR and multi-zone mesh WiFi.

Your IT Man were chosen to upgrade wired and wireless network for DP Agri at their head office in Bideford, North Devon as well as Ilminster and Shepton Mallet branches in Somerset.

We recently stayed working with Rob and Katie after taking over from their previous IT provider. The IT at their main warehouse in Devon had been long neglected with cables through doorways or dangerously hanging from ceiling tiles. Some telephones worked, some didn’t. We found there were two separate wireless networks running on the same channel and both about 10ft apart. Jointly they only covered half the warehouse! The CCTV system was non-existant with cameras going back to a recorder which was broken or no one knew how it functioned.

It was immediately apparent this would be a big job. The structured cabling in an old warehouse was non-existent and access incredibly hard. However, after a few days we had run all the cables in without disruption, before building the new network and switching DP over from the old cabling to the new. Some of the cables we pulled out were thread bare in places – reaffirming why this needed doing in the first place. DP are now at a very high standard for support and will see long term savings with their telephone system costs, coupled with enhanced features and the ability to make use of all the sites properly.

The CCTV is local and remotely viewable with a timeline, allowing recordings to be played back in HD and with sound, on any device. Internal and external IP-rated cameras, with enhanced infra-red allows recordings to be made anytime of the night or day.

What the client says

“We have only just started working with Simon and were very impressed with the professionalism of this business who are more than happy to come and look after all our sites. The costs were very reasonable and allows our business to function properly and expand.”

BEH Interiors

Client: www.behinteriors.co.uk

Number of users: 18

Cups of tea: 24

Scope of work: Complete CAT6 rewire, replacement network switching, multi-zone mesh WiFi, redundant Internet connectivity

We have been providing IT support and supplying managed services to BEH Interiors for over 6 years. After moving offices in 2015 the time was right to complete a full refit of their exclusive Farringdon office. The job was a major challenge. With over a dozen staff it wasn’t feasible to simply cut them off while we worked our magic – instead opting to run two separate networks so we could do all of our works without impacting the main office. The switchover happened out of hours ensuring zero business downtime. We opted for Excel CAT6 LSZH cabling in purple to complement the existing company colours, including patching in the wiring cabinet & to desks.

What the client says

“As our IT partner for so long, we knew that the team at Your IT Man could deliver the infrastructure we needed to help run and grow our business. The install was without disruption meaning we could continue working while the works were carried out. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them.”
